Though Prof. Sukumar Nayar describes himself as ordinary, most ordinary men don’t visit 41 countries, climb Kilimanjaro, get introduced to His Highness the Aga Khan or serve the United Nations as a consultant!
Just when you think the globe-trotting, ever-inquisitive Nayar has settled down, he embarks on a bold, new jaunt to another locale. His zest for life translates into an extra ordinary tale.
During his quiet beginnings in Kerala, India, Nayar shows no marked signs of ambition or intellectual engagement, except a remarkable affection for language and words. When the British Government recruits him to the civil service and sends him to Uganda, his horizons are suddenly expanded. There he meets his wife, who also would eventually retire with him as an instructor, advances his career and forever changes his relationship with academia and his perception of the world.
In 1965 when he settles down in Alberta, Canada, initially to head a high school and later to teach at the Grande Prairie Regional College, it seems, at last, that Nayar has landed. However, the call of the stage is strong and he quickly becomes a leader in the local theatre community, mounting daring and provocative plays. We also find him in New York studying with Lee Strasberg and Elia Kazan, having dinner with Helen Hayes, and getting involved in a serious study of masks and rituals.
Not being satisfied with academia and theatre, the restless professor gets himself recruited by the United Nations, and travels to many countries including Mongolia and Papua New Guinea.
The Vivid Air is an autobiographical account of a personal story that is sometimes surprising, often humorous and always interesting. Though it eschews traditional chronology, it is as free flowing and joyous as its author’s approach to living. This passionate world citizen relishes every breath of the vivid air that he breathes.
The Vivid Air eBook Sukumar Nayar
It can be risky to order the memoirs - sight unseen - of somoeone who isn't a celebrity, particularly if you don't have any reviews on Amazon to provide reassurance. Fortunately, Sukumar Nayar is a close friend of mine and indeed Sukumar did ask me to consider posting "a word . . . or three or four" about his book; I knew that I would enjoy The Vivid Air.However, my responsibility as a (first time) Amazon reviewer is to answer the question of whether someone who does not know Sukumar (yet) would be interested in his memoirs. This is a question that Sukumar asks himself. "I am not quite sure for whom I am writing this," he states. "Sure, the members of the famly and close friends might enjoy the episodes and escapades; but is there a larger readership? And if not, does it matter? If I get this published, who knows? It just might make its way on to the bestseller list!"
The Vivid Air may not make it onto the bestseller list, but it will certainly be of interest to a larger readership. It is a well-told story of the remarkable life of a very charming man. I can verify not only that the Product Description is accurate but that Sukumar is the type of person who would cheerfully pack up and move from Kampala in Uganda to Boyle in Alberta, Canada, half a world away - and then manage to have adventures in Boyle. Read the book and you will you will learn why it is not a good idea for a Norton 750 motorcycle to annoy an elephant and why it is a good idea to explain to a group of Tanzanian exchange students that "moose" is not the Canadian plural of "mouse" - at least when you serve them Moose Curry for dinner.
I have no hesitation in giving The Vivid Air a five star rating with the general reading public in mind; if you do not know Sukumar Nayar, you will not regret getting to know him by reading The Vivid Air, if you do know him, you will not regret getting to know him even better by reading The Vivid Air.

The Vivid Air eBook Sukumar Nayar Reviews
I have had the pleasure of knowing the author for forty years. I thought I really knew him but upon finishing 'The Vivid Air', I realize how little I actually did know about Sukumar Nayar. So much about his life was fate and fortune - had he not decided to further his education, accept a posting in Uganda, continued his studies in England, resurrected his interest in and love for theatre, leave Africa for Canada.......he might well have lived out his life in India which would have been our loss. His stories are varied and mesmerizing. Time and space have required careful selection of anecdotes. I only wish he could write another book and delve even more deeply into his fascinating life.
I ordered this book soon after it was released. When it arrived, I sat down to scan through the book and found myself captured by the true story of a teacher who ventured from India, to Kenya on to Alberta and finally to Ontario while continuing to travel the world. What makes this story so interesting is that the man, Sukumar Nayar, writes of his experiences prior to and after India's independence and then he travels out of his home environment to Africa and on to North America. His observations and comment are priceless and rich with the essence of story-telling actual events.
Professor Nayar was my teacher and principal, so I had the opportunity to relive some of that history that he has so ably written about during the time he taught and encouraged me. But what captured me most was what he candidly said about the world as he saw it and the rich narrative he brought to this stage - an international stage - and how "drama" connected it all.
If you wish to gain the insight of a person from his life story that spans continents and enjoy the narrative of a well written memoir - choose this book! It puts a human face on what it is to be a world citizen who values individual people regardless of who they are or where they are from.
Lord Byron believed truth is stranger than fiction, I would add that it is infinitely more fascinating as well.
I bought this book intending to read it after I finished my current book. I made the happy mistake of reading the first few pages "just to see what it's about" and could not put my kindle down. Sukumar Nayar writes in a way that makes me feel I am standing right there beside him throughout his adventures. His stories are interesting, as well as touching and humourous.
When you buy this book make sure you have some free time because once you start you will not want to put it down!
