Robert Crumb's Book of Genesis R. Crumb 8601405798084 Books Reviews

Sorry to disagree with the previous review, but I think it needs to be said...if you love Crumb's art, you will love this book. I am stunned at the sheer volume of work it took to illustrate the thing. Awestruck, really. I've always loved Crumb's art and work, at first (when I was young) because he seemed so twisted and funny, but later, because I realized what a truly fine artist he is. I say, never mind the "is it passionate" crap.

In March of '09, some online articles were calling this upcoming work "subversive"... Not so. There's no intent to be comical here...or to insult Judeo-Christian theology. It seems, in every sense, to be a legitimate illustration of the Book of Genesis. And, I found it beautiful, because Crumb's attention to visual detail is beautiful.

Crumb relies on two sources for the translation including the King James version, and more so, Robert Alter's "The Five Books Of Moses". So, sure, there may be some disagreement in translation for individuals who are version specific. I would suggest we look past that and just enjoy the book for its merits and Crumb's talent.

One should be aware that a few panels may be considered "steamy" for younger children. Some nudity appears and, for instance, when in Chapter 19 it is written that Lot's daughters gave their father wine to drink and then lay with him, Crumb illustrates it. It is my belief, however, that Crumb's intent here is simply illustration, not subversion.

At any rate, it is an amazing work of art, not to mention a book of many important stories.
...READ AGAIN!

Robert Crumb's take on Genesis is not a parody or a lampoon, but a word for word, dead serious translation from the Bible to comic ("graphic novel") format. No pun intended, no irony, no kidding -and its result may very well be the XX century artisic answer to Gustave Doré. Crumb's sharp pen and wondrous imagination depicts those stories as you've never seen them and are not likely to forget. The characters portrayed look more like bronze age cavemen than the Christmas pageant folk one has in mind after years of Hollywood beautification (my personal favorites are the Nephilim -just what the hell are those?!).

Is it a religious book? Not so, argues the cartoonist, but you'll be the better judge. One word of advice this is NOT a Sunday School book meant for children (needless to say, nor is the Bible!).
R Crumb has produced a masterpiece. Taking the book of Genesis, bringing it to life with his amazing drawings and a savvy analytical mind, he has created a fresh vision of one of our civilization's oldest books. His research and commentary at the end of the book is just as thorough, engaging and enlightening as the pages of Genesis. Bravo! I gained new insight into today's issues and problems regarding the "sand religions" and their influence on our lives.
Crumb's genius lends the perfect touch to this faithful depiction of the Biblical text. This effort is sincere -- it is not humor or satire. Yet, it breathes with Crumb's inimitable and unique perspective on life and the human condition. Crumb treats the text with the respect, and even reverence, it deserves, but, Crumb's masterful ability to depict humanity with all of its warts, imperfections and vulgarity conveys an honesty and genuineness to the interpretation of the Biblical text and stories that any honest student of Genesis understands actually lies underneath the pious veneer some would gloss it over with and let's us see the raw fallen humanity that was what the Biblical authors originally intended.
Remember when you were young and someone got you a book of Bible stories? This is not that. Remember when you got older and may have been a 'counter-culture' type (a Hippie or a Yippie?) Then you probably know who R. Crumb is, or at least Mr. Natural--the Keep On Truckin' guy. Maybe you ARE a Mr. Natural guy in the Tribe, like me. So finally after not being able to find it in a used book store, I ordered it. This is not for kids if you don't want them looking at Eve's (cartoon) nipples and mature illustrations. But I would hardly consider it 'dirty'. It looks to be mature in a way we rarely see in 'religious' treatments. I was curious to see how Crumb would handle the content of B'reishiyt both textually and in illustration. I like it fine and think he has done an appropriate job.
First, I have to say that, in spite of growing up in the 60s, I've never been a great fan of the drawing style of R. Crumb. But this summer, on a visit to Seattle, I spent an afternoon at the Seattle Art Museum, where the featured exhibit was an extensive look at some of the world's most famous print makers. Surprisingly, the final phase of the exhibit was all of the original drawings from Crumb's The Book of Genesis Illustrated. I spent over an hour reading each panel, but the exhibit went on for half a dozen rooms and I literally ran out of time. The extent of this work is more than impressive, as is Crumb's research into Bible-era costumes, buildings, and backgrounds. Not being able to finish the museum exhibit, I had to buy the book, and am still in awe. This is not a comic book, but an incredible attempt to illustrate Genesis in a straight-forward manner, and the result is amazing. As Crump warns on the cover, this is not for children, since he honestly depicts the Bible's several descriptions of sex acts and incest, and--true to Crump's style--all women are drawn as overly voluptuous. But for anyone interested in visualizing Genesis, this is a masterpiece.
